There are two ways to prepare the yarn for weaving: Direct warping and Sectional warping. Direct warping is what it sounds like: you measure your warp right onto the loom and start weaving, while sectional warping calls for pre-measuring the threads, splitting them into the groupings that are appropriate for each shaft or harness on our sturdy friends… then taking those measured sections of thread over to your loom. Both approaches have their pros and cons so let’s dig a little deeper into each.
Direct warping is sometimes quicker and more efficient than sectional as it bypasses the step of measuring and dividing the warp before moving it to the loom. This is a time-saving measure, and diminishes the risk of error. But, loom to loom direct warping is a little harder to get set up and takes up way more room around the loom for warping.

By contrast, sectional warping has more consistent control over warp tension and may be easier to configure for intricate weaving patterns. You can also adjust it easier while warping. But sectional warping can be more time consuming and of course needs a means for measuring and dividing the warp.

For large scale production however, direct warping and sectional warping may provide some big advantages. Direct warping has the potential to simplify the process of warping and to cut the labor cost, so it is more applicable for mass production. Sectional warping can, however, provide even tension on a warp when being used across multiple looms and lead to better quality finished goods.
